Rome, Florence, and Venice - three great and distinctively different cities in Italy! Our tour leader has visited Italy more than twenty times, is a sommelier, and loves sharing everything he knows about this country that is steeped in the history of Western culture. The power of Rome, the Renaissance in Florence, and the stunning romance of Venice are on full display in this 8-night stay in Italy. You will feel as if you are visiting three countries with only the language being their common thread
Trip Itinerary highlights:
Day 1 - We’ll meet at 4:00pm in our host hotel in Rome for a short orientation, and then head out for a walking tour on which we’ll visit Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon, and Piazza Navona. Several gelato shops will call out to us… Dinner and a visit to an Enoteca (Wine Bar) are included in the trip price!
Day 2 - Today we meet the 2000 year history of the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, and the archaeological wonder that is the Basilica of San Clemente. Naturally, we will stop for gelato along the way.
Day 3 - This morning we visit a different country! We’ll tour the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and Saint Peter’s, the largest church in Christendom. After a late lunch, we’ll shop along the famous streets of Rome. We should be able to find some gelato, too.
Day 4 - Our private bus will take us to Florence this morning where we’ll spend the next two nights. Upon arrival, we’ll have lunch (included in trip price) at the oldest wine bar in Florence, Casa del Vino. Here we will eat great food and drink great wine (you’re on vacation, it’s okay). Next door is the huge Central Market and on the streets is the Market of San Lorenzo. After spending some time in shopping mode, we’ll wander through town to the Ponte Vecchio (old bridge) to see the gold merchants.
Day 5 - The Medici family of merchants were great admirers and benefactors of some of the world’s great artists, including Michelangelo Buonarati. The Galleria dell’Accademia is home to a number of Michelangelo’s breathtaking sculptures including David, and the Prigioni (“slaves” or “prisoner”). Next stop is the great Duomo (Cathedral) and it’s Baptistry. Then on to a must-visit stop to il Porcellino to rub the nose of the boar so as to insure another visit to this wonderful city. A short walk takes us to the Basilica of Santa Croce, the final resting place of many great Italians (Galileo, Michelangelo and more). Our final stop before returning to our hotel is Bar Vivoli, one of the great gelato shops in all the world.
Day 6 - Today finds us heading for the train station for a picturesque journey to the man-made islands of Venice. After we check in at our hotel, we’ll visit Saint Mark’s Cathedral, we’ll ride to the top of the Campanile (the bell tower), then shop on the Mercerie (street of merchants) on our way to The Rialto Bridge.
Day 7 - This morning we’ll visit the island of Murano to learn about the great glassmakers of Venice. In the afternoon, we visit a lovely little church, Santa Maria dei Miracoli, which is the favorite church of brides - you’ll see why when we visit. From there we’ll wander to Dorsoduro where we’ll take in some mask shops. We’ll wend our way to dinner in Campo Santo Stefano before taking in an evening concert by Interpreti Veneziani which will offer us a truly masterful presentation of hometown composer, Antonio Vivaldi.
Day 8 - Today we’ll visit the oldest part of Venice, tour the Basilica dei Frari (Venice’s Santa Croce), and have lunch (included in the trip price) at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Then we visit Scuola Grande di San Rocco, called Titian’s Sistine Chapel, and finish the afternoon with a gondola ride through the back canals (also included in trip price). This evening you can join our trip leader on a Cicccheti tour (Google it!).
Day 9 - After breakfast, we finish our trip and depart Venice for home, or another journey. We hope you will want to visit Italy again - we also visit France, Spain, England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Ireland, and on and on.
